The story behind Mother’s day

Why do we even celebrate Mother’s day to begin with? Is it just a reason to spoil your mother? No, not really, Mother's day as we know it has been a day when you buy a gift to show your mother how much she means to you. But the story behind starts way earlier…

Mother’s day is from the beginning not just a day to honor the mothers in your life. In the UK the day actually comes from the middle ages where families gathered at home together during lent. Otherwise the kids were often away working, even if they were just 10 years young… Today many countries around the world celebrate Mother’s day even though the dates can differ between different countries. This year Mother’s day in Australia and the US will be on the 12th of May, while in the UK it's earlier, in March and the exact date is still set by the lent period.
In the US, Mother’s day is always celebrated on the second Sunday of May. It was a woman called Anna Jarvis who started Mother’s day by having a small memorial service for her mom in 1907 and in 1914 the US president made Mother’s day into a national holiday. Today Mothers day is about celebrating your mother and showing her appreciation and being thankful to her for all she has done.
